The Melting Sun Preamp v2 is the new and improved version of a pedal that got a very small run back in the summer of 2022. There's a specific part used in this circuit that was hard to come by at that time so the design was shelved temporarily and then I pivoted to focus on expanding the Homework Series lineup.

The Melting Sun is a jfet based preamp-style overdrive pedal that can be used as a clean base tone or as full on slammed amp-like distortion. The circuit naturally has a lot amount of low end which make it a good option for bass, baritones, or low tuned guitars.

volume - controls the overall level of the signal. Warning, it can be very loud!

gain - controls the amount of distortion in the signal

low - controls the amount of low end content in the signal

high - controls the amount of high end content in the signal

Whats the difference between the previous version and this version?

Even though there's only 10 of the previous version floating around in the world I thought it would be worth labelling this one as a second iteration. The core sound is the same but the EQ section is tweaked to get a more usable range, and then it has soft-touch relay based true bypass switching.

What is a preamp?

In the pro-audio world a preamp denotes a piece of equipment that will bump the sound source from mic or instrument level to line level. In the context of effects pedals anything calling itself a preamp generally has circuitry that emulates the preamp section of a tube amp. The result is a pedal that functions the same as any overdrive/distortion but has a more 'amp-like' response to it compared to other circuits. Additionally these preamp style pedals are often used in the place of traditional amplifiers for recording or live performance purposes. You can pair the Melting Sun with your choice of cabinet simulation to get all kinds of amp sounds.

What's the difference between the blue version and the bare aluminum version?

Nothing! The artwork is based on a photolithography print I made in 2018 and featured the blue as the base colour with red and black layers overtop. When I did the first run of Melting Suns they were all blue except one test print in the bare silver enclosure. I really liked it and decided whenever I did another run of them I would offer them in blue as well as the bare aluminum.

This pedal also features relay based soft-touch true bypass switching that will default to BYPASS when disconnected from power.

Powered by 9V DC, centre negative, 2.1mm connection with a current draw of 30mA.
